Fire confined to the attic; six residents displaced and no injuries reported.
Stamford, Ct- July 21, 11:58 a.m.- The Stamford Fire Department responded to 93 Knickerbocker Ave. in the Springdale neighborhood following multiple 911 calls reporting that a home had been struck by lightning, igniting the roof.
Upon arrival, members of Springdale Volunteer Engine 57 found visible fire extending from the roof of the 3½-story residence, along with damage to the chimney consistent with storm activity. Engine 57 deployed an attack line and initiated an exterior fire attack to contain the flames.
Engine Company 6 advanced an attack line to the third floor to extinguish any remaining fire, while Engine Company 8 deployed a backup hose line to support suppression efforts. Rescue Company 1 conducted a primary search of the residence and located one occupant in a basement apartment who was unharmed. Truck Company 1 performed overhaul operations in the attic to ensure the fire had not extended beyond the area of origin. The crew also positioned its aerial ladder to access the roof, confirm complete extinguishment, and provide ventilation as needed.
The fire was brought under control within 27 minutes and was confined to the attic, preventing extension into the remainder of the structure. No civilian or firefighter injuries were reported.
The residence sustained moderate fire, smoke, and water damage. The American Red Cross was requested to assist six displaced residents and their pets.
The response included five Engine Companies, one Heavy Rescue Company, one Truck Company, units from the Springdale Volunteer Fire Company, the North District Deputy Chief, and the on-duty Shift Commander. Additional support was provided by the Stamford Fire Department Mechanical Division, Safety Officer and Fire Marshal Division’s, as well as Stamford Emergency Medical Services.
The cause and origin of the fire remain under investigation by the Stamford Fire Marshal's Office.
