Since October 16, the Stamford Fire Department has been conducting our annual hydrant flow testing across the city. This work ensures that every hydrant will perform properly when lives and property depend on it.
Each hydrant is opened only once per year. Crews may return later to confirm that the hydrant drains completely and will not freeze during the winter months. This yearly testing is critical to:
  • Confirm that hydrants open, close, and drain correctly
  • Detect frozen valves, broken parts, or blockages before an emergency
  • Measure actual water flow and pressure for firefighting
  • Keep hydrant maps and response data current for our planning systems
  • Support Aquarion Water Company’s maintenance and infrastructure planning
  • Meet NFPA and ISO requirements that directly affect community fire insurance ratings
During this process, you may notice temporary low water pressure or brown, discolored water. This happens when mineral deposits inside service lines are disturbed. If this occurs:
  • Run your cold-water faucet until the water clears before normal use
  • Avoid doing laundry until the water is running clear
We understand this can be inconvenient and appreciate your patience. Your cooperation helps us keep Stamford ready, resilient, and safe.
