Stamford, CT – In the early hours of the morning, the Stamford Fire Department responded to a house fire at 109 Hardesty Lane in North Stamford, where smoke detectors alerted the occupants, giving them the critical time they needed to escape the fire safely.

The first 911 call was received at 2:04 AM, and Stamford Fire Department units arrived on the scene at 2:13 AM to find heavy fire conditions at the rear of the home, which had spread on the interior from the first floor to the second floor and attic space. Thick smoke was pushing out from the single-family residence's second-floor windows and roof dormers. Firefighters from Engine 8 initiated an exterior attack, while Engine 9 crews entered through the front of the home to combat the interior fire.

Due to the rural location, a water tanker operation was set up to ensure a continuous water supply, with tankers from the Turn of River Volunteer Fire Department and Long Ridge Volunteer Fire Department supporting Stamford Fire crews. Two portable pools were established on-site to facilitate the operation.

Firefighters successfully extinguished the fire, which was declared under control at 3:10 AM, with all occupants having safely exited the home, thanks to the timely activation of their working smoke detectors. One firefighter was transported to Stamford Hospital with injuries.

A total of five engines, one heavy rescue unit, and one aerial apparatus responded to the scene from the Stamford Fire Department, as well as two tankers from the Turn of River Volunteer Fire Department and one tanker from the Long Ridge Volunteer Fire Department.  Additional support was provided by Stamford Emergency Medical Services (EMS), the Stamford Fire Department Safety Officers, the Mechanical Division, the Stamford Fire Marshal’s Division, and the Stamford Police Department.

The cause and origin of the fire are currently under investigation by the Stamford Fire Marshal’s Division.

Chief’s Remarks on the Importance of Smoke Detectors:

“Smoke detectors are our first line of defense in keeping families safe from fire. Today, we saw just how effective they can be in giving occupants precious time to escape safely,” said Stamford Fire Chief Robert Morris. “The presence of working smoke detectors in this home made all the difference. We urge everyone to take a moment today to check theirs. It’s a small step that could save your life.”

The Stamford Fire Department wants to remind residents that although Fire Prevention Week has ended, the importance of having working smoke detectors is a year-round priority. Smoke detectors can provide the vital early warning needed to escape a fire.
