Quick Response Contained The Fire to the Garage and Attic Areas

At 1502 Tuesday afternoon, Engine 4 was on Magee Avenue when they noticed a column of dense black smoke in the area of Shippan Avenue and Cove Road.  They began their response and radioed dispatch to find out whether they had any reports from a specific address.  Dispatch notified them that they were about to transmit a structure assignment consisting of three engines, a truck, a rescue, an Incident Commander and a Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) to a reported garage fire in the area of Wardwell Street and Fredrick street.  Engine 4 arrived just two minutes later and found heavy fire and smoke showing from two front-facing garage doors and a left side window at the rear of the two-family, three-story wood-frame structure.

Crews quickly stretched a hose line and began an initial attack on the rapidly developing fire in the garage.  The main body of the fire was quickly knocked down in the garage area, but the fire had begun extending up the two front side corners of the house.  Arriving crews stretched two additional handlines to the first and second-floor residences, while other firefighters began ventilating the roof to stop the spread of the fire in the attic.

The fire was declared under control at 1549 by the Incident Commander but crews worked for more than an additional hour assuring the complete extinguishment of the fire. The Stamford Fire Marshal Office was on the scene into the evening investigating the cause of the fire which has not yet been released.

Stamford EMS was on the scene evaluating firefighters as they entered the rehabilitation area.    One firefighter was transported to the Stamford Hospital Emergency Department with a minor injury and released.  No other civilian or firefighter injuries were reported. Stamford Police was on the scene for traffic and crowd control.  Eversource was on the scene to shut down power to the house.

The two residential occupancies suffered extensive smoke and water damage to the first and second floors, but the fire was generally contained to the garage, exterior walls and the attic of the structure.

The fire displaced two families who were making their own plans for relocation.
