Tuesday, March 17th at 03:57 the City of Stamford Emergency Communications Center received a 911 call reporting a fire in the home with dark smoke on the 2nd floor at 56 Maher Road.

Engine 4 from the East Side Fire Station was first to arrive at 04:03 and reported heavy smoke showing from the rear corner on the 2nd floor of a three-and-a-half-story home. Crews from Engine 4 and Engine 1 quickly initiated an aggressive interior attack, encountering heavy smoke conditions in the stairwell and on the 2nd floor, while Rescue 1 conducted a primary search for trapped occupants. The crew of Truck 1 ventilated the 2nd floor windows using ground ladders.

Heavy fire was discovered in a rear bedroom and was knocked down at 04:19 and was fully under control approximately 5 minutes later. The fire was contained to a bedroom with smoke and water damaging the rest of the 2nd floor. All occupants safely evacuated prior to the fire department’s arrival, and no civilian or firefighter injuries were reported.

A total of four engine companies, one heavy rescue unit, one ladder truck, the on-duty Shift Commander, and the North District Deputy Chief responded to the incident. Additional support was provided by the Stamford Fire Department Safety Officer, Mechanical Division, and Fire Marshal’s Division, as well as Stamford Emergency Medical Services and the Stamford Police Department.

The cause and origin of the fire remain under investigation by the Stamford Fire Mashal’s Office.
