Downtown Stamford Fire Controlled by Building Sprinkler System

A stovetop fire in a downtown apartment building Monday evening was controlled by the buildings extinguishing system. Firefighters responded to the Charter Oak Housing's Senior and Disabled Residence at 40 Clinton Avenue at 9:18 pm and discovered a hood canister type extinguisher and an automatic sprinkler system confining a stovetop fire to a 4th floor apartment's kitchen. With the fire extinguished, firefighters shut down the sprinkler system and worked to control water damage which was affecting floors 4 down to 1. 30 firefighters responded with 4 Engines, 2 Ladder Trucks, 1 Heavy Rescue and a Command Vehicle. No injuries were reported, but 1 resident and a dog were relocated by the Red Cross. Stamford Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the cause and origin of the fire.
