At 21:19 on Saturday, May 18, 2024, Stamford Fire Department responded to 77 Prospect Street for a report of smoke in the lobby.  Upon arrival at 21:23, Firefighters found a floor sanding machine on fire in a first floor apartment.  The fire was quickly extinguished by the FD using portable extinguishers.  However, the fire generated a significant amount of smoke that moved into the first floor hallway and lobby area as residents were evacuating the 12 story, 140 unit apartment buiding.  Firefighters treated 2 residents for medical issues related to the evacuation and smoke condition. The fire was declared under control at 21:34.  Stamford EMS transported the 2 patients to Stamford Hospital for further evaluation.  Due to the size and occupancy of the building a second alarm response from the Stamford FD brought a total of 43 firefighters with 6 Engines, 2 Ladder Trucks, a Heavy Rescue, one Deputy Chief and a Safety Officer to the scene.  Stamford EMS responded with a Paramedic Supervisor and 3 Ambulances.  Stamford PD shut down Prospect Street for the duration of the incident.  The cause and origin of the fire is under investigation by the Stamford Fire Marshal’s Division.
