A storm cell containing strong winds, lightning, and heavy rain moving through Stamford around 5pm yesterday resulted in multiple calls.

At 4:54 pm the 911 center received multiple calls for people requiring assistance and around Wallacks Point area of Stamford on Long island Sound. A report of 2 kayakers requiring assistance was reported as well a vessel with occupants who anchor line broke and was drifting towards the rocks, along with a report of people stranded on the rocks in the same general area. Assistance was rendered to the victims by the Stamford Police Marine Unit, the Stamford Fire Marine Unit, and the US Coast Guard. A single kayaker was safely recovered.

At 5:00 pm a near lightning strike resulted in a house fire on Gurley Rd. A  stubborn smoldering fire in the basement crawlspace area was extinguished.  The fire brought under control by fire units after 20 minutes. The home received significant damage to a first floor bathroom, as well as smoke damage.

At 5:14 units responded to an automatic alarm on Woodbrook Dr.

At 5:42 units were dispatched to reported vehicle fire on Magee Ave.
