(Stamford, CT) The Stamford Fire Department (SFD) responded to two structure fires during the evening hours of Thanksgiving in the Glenbrook, and Shippan neighborhoods of the city.

10/28/19 at 09:58 pm – 48 Union Street. The SFD responded on report of an activated fire alarm. The occupancy is a large commercial building occupied by multiple businesses. Upon arrival, Engine 6 from the Glenbrook fire house found the building sprinkler system activated and a strong odor of smoke from the exterior. Fire fighters discovered a heavy smoke condition inside the building in a tenant space utilized as a wood-working shop. Fire fighters stretched hose lines, and deployed search ropes to overcome maze like conditions. The source of the smoke was determined to be from a fire involving a dust collection unit in the shop. The fire was held in check by one activated sprinkler head. Fire fighters extinguished the remaining fire and ventilated the building using mechanical fans. No fire fighter or civilian injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Stamford Fire Marshal’s office.

10/29/19 at 00:27 am – 28 Ocean Drive. The SFD responded on report of a basement fire. Upon arrival, Engine 4 from the Shippan fire house found the home owners had an active fire in the fire place which had extended out of the chimney into an exterior wall. Fire fighters stretched a hose line and used power saws to cut away the exterior house siding to expose the extending fire. Fire fighters also breached areas of the masonry chimney from the basement level to ensure complete extinguishment. No fire fighter or civilian injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Stamford Fire Marshal’s office.

The SFD and the National Fire Protection Association recommend that chimneys, fireplaces, and vents shall be inspected at least once a year for soundness, freedom from deposits, and correct clearances. Cleaning, maintenance, and repairs shall be done if necessary.
