Install and test your smoke detectors in your home.

Plan your escape from your house using E.D.I.T.H. (Exit Drills in the Home).

Keep strict rules about smokers in your home.

  • Never allow smoking in a bed.
  • Keep matches and lighters away from children.
  • Check all ash trays to assure that smoking materials are fully extinguished before you go to bed or leave the house.

Use care when cooking.

  • Keep items such as towels, clothing and curtains away from the stove area. These can easily catch fire.
  • Keep a fire extinguisher near the kitchen and know how to use it.

 

Use caution with space heaters.

  • Keep flammable clothing, blankets and curtains away from all types of space heaters.
  • Plug electrical heaters in directly to a wall outlet. Be sure to unplug when not in use.

Teach your children that matches and lighters are not toys.

Teach your children not to be afraid of firefighters.

  • Bring them to your local fire station to meet the firefighters. They will usually dress up to show your children what a firefighter looks like when they go into fires.
  • Learn how to treat burns.

Follow electrical safety rules.

  • Use safety plugs in unused outlets, especially if you have small children.Avoid overloading electrical outlets.
  • Avoid running electrical cords under the carpet or furniture.

Keep low if your home fills with smoke.

Teach your kids "stop, drop and roll".
